Flame Tube Boiler: Structure, Working Principle and Industrial Applications

March 11, 2026

Industrial boilers play a crucial role in providing heat and steam for manufacturing processes. Among the various designs available today, the flame tube boiler is one of the most widely used types due to its stable performance, simple structure, and reliable heat transfer efficiency. Many factories rely on this type of boiler to ensure continuous steam supply for production.

This article explains what a flame tube boiler is, its main components and operating principle, and the differences between a flame tube boiler and a water tube boiler. It also introduces ZOZEN Boiler’s models based on the flame tube boiler design, including their advantages, specifications, industrial applications, and maintenance considerations.

Part 1: What Is a Flame Tube Boiler?

A flame tube boiler is a type of fire-tube boiler in which the combustion flame and hot gases pass through a large tube (called the flame tube) that runs through a water-filled boiler shell. The heat produced by fuel combustion is transferred through the tube walls into the surrounding water, generating steam or hot water.

Because of its relatively simple structure and stable heat transfer process, the flame tube boiler is widely used in medium-capacity industrial steam systems.

Main Components of a Flame Tube Boiler

A typical flame tube boiler consists of several key components that work together to produce steam efficiently:

  • Boiler Shell
The main pressure vessel that holds water and steam. It surrounds the flame tube and smoke tubes where heat transfer occurs.
  • Flame Tube (Furnace Tube)
This is the large central tube where fuel combustion takes place. The flame travels through this tube, transferring heat to the water surrounding it.
  • Smoke Tubes
After combustion in the flame tube, hot flue gases pass through multiple smaller tubes that further transfer heat to the water.
  • Burner System
The burner mixes fuel and air and ignites the mixture to produce a stable flame inside the flame tube.
  • Control and Safety Devices
These include pressure gauges, safety valves, water level indicators, and automatic control systems to ensure safe operation of the flame tube boiler.

Working Principle of a Flame Tube Boiler

The operating principle of a flame tube boiler is based on heat transfer from combustion gases to water.

  1. First, the burner ignites the fuel inside the flame tube. The flame and hot gases travel through the tube, transferring heat to the surrounding water. After leaving the flame tube, the gases flow through additional smoke tubes, where further heat exchange occurs.
  2. As the water absorbs heat, it gradually reaches boiling point and produces steam. The generated steam collects in the upper part of the boiler shell and is then delivered to industrial processes. This efficient heat transfer mechanism makes the flame tube boiler suitable for many industrial heating applications.

Difference Between Flame Tube Boiler and Water Tube Boiler

Although both designs generate steam, there are important structural differences between a flame tube boiler and a water tube boiler.

In a flame tube boiler, hot combustion gases flow inside tubes while water surrounds the tubes. This design is simpler and easier to maintain, making it suitable for medium-capacity applications.

In contrast, a water tube boiler works in the opposite way—water flows inside the tubes while hot gases pass outside them. Water tube boilers are typically used for higher-pressure and larger-capacity industrial systems.

Therefore, the flame tube boiler is often chosen for industries that require reliable steam supply with moderate capacity and lower pressure levels.

Part 2: ZOZEN Flame Tube Boiler Models and Their Advantages

Export to Mongolia: ZOZEN 8 T/H Three-Pass Gas-Fired Steam Boilers for Coca-Cola Project

Case introduction: MCS Coca-Cola LLC became Coca-Cola’s authorized bottler in Mongolia in September 2001, helping the local market integrate with modern industry standards. Its parent company, MCS Group, was founded in 1993, starting with energy consulting. Today, it operates across multiple sectors, and its subsidiaries play a significant role in Mongolia’s economic growth.

To expand into new categories such as iced tea and juice, MCS Coca-Cola urgently needed highly efficient and stable steam boilers to support production. Because these new products require stringent temperature control, the stability of the steam boilers directly impacts product quality.

After three WNS series gas-fired steam boilers were installed, they delivered outstanding real-world performance in MCS Coca-Cola’s production. The burner atomizes the fuel for full combustion in the corrugated furnace, and the three-pass design ensures thorough heat utilization, significantly boosting thermal efficiency and effectively reducing fuel consumption. An intelligent control system precisely adjusts operating parameters, while 24/7 water level and pressure monitoring ensure stable and safe boiler operation.
